The government is drafting regulations on International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) controls to combat the illicit mobile phone market in the country.
Director of Supervision of Circulating Goods and Services of Ministry of Trade Wahyu Hidayat revealed that Indonesia is now a target market of various countries producing mobile devices. This makes the potential entry of illegal goods or those coming from the black market is increasing.
“IMEI is very important because it brings information about the mobile phone such as factories, mobile phone models and so on,” he said in ITC Roxy Mas, Jakarta, Monday (30/10/2017).
Implementation of IMEI control regulations, he added, only allows mobile devices that have IMEI registered to access cellular networks in the territory of Indonesia. He also said it would increase supervision of products on the market.
Wahyu mentions several points that are monitored in the circulation of the phone, among others, the inclusion of labels in the Indonesian language on the goods, the completeness of the manual usage and warranty cards in the Indonesian language for telematics and electronic products, and the inclusion of IMEI.
“The entry of illegal devices on the black market that actually hinder the domestic industry and harm consumers,” he explained.
He added that the regulation could increase the production and use of products in the country. On the other hand, the move is believed to prevent market distortions from unfair imported product imports.
