JAKARTA – President Joko Widodo has banned the use of Indonesia Smart Card (KIP) funds by school students to buy cellphones or pulses.
The statement was conveyed by the President in an event to distribute 3,300 KIPs at the Builder State SLB, Lebak Bulus, Cilandak, South Jakarta, Wednesday (03/06/2019).
In the KIP distribution event, Jokowi had a dialogue with a number of KIP recipient school students. In the dialogue, a student asked by Jokowi stated that he would use the KIP funds to buy a cellphone.
“I can’t,” said Jokowi in response to the student’s statement.
He asserted that KIP ownership will be revoked if the funds received are used to purchase credit or cellphones. KIP funds, continued Jokowi, should be used to buy school equipment such as books, uniforms, or shoes.
The value of KIP funds provided for elementary students is Rp.450,000, junior high school students Rp750,000, and high school / vocational students Rp1,5 million.
Meanwhile, Minister of Education and Culture (Mendikbud) Muhadjir Effendy said that prospective KIP recipients in all of Jakarta reached 31,229 people, with a budget reaching Rp.4.11 trillion. He added that the value of the KIP budget for DKI Jakarta province is one of the largest in Indonesia.
