Ubud, Bali

Ubud sits in the green heart of Bali, where rice terraces, river gorges and temple-lined lanes shape daily life. It is the island's cultural center, known for traditional dance, painting, woodcarving and ceremonies that you will often stumble upon as offerings are set out each morning. The pace is slower than the southern coast, though the main streets can get busy by midday. We suggest starting early, when the light is soft and the paths are quiet.

Ubud suits travelers who like to wander, learn and eat well. Walk through the rice fields, join a cooking class, try a yoga session, or visit the markets and galleries for local crafts. Food ranges from simple warung meals to inventive vegetarian cooking. Ubud has no beaches, but the coast is roughly an hour's drive away, so a day trip is easy. The dry season, from April to October, brings the clearest weather for walking and exploring, though we find the greener wet months rewarding too.
