How Typo In Google Pixel Build Script Broke The “Lifelong Photos Storage”

If you are a Pixel user, you might want to check on your unlimited photos storage. Lately, a bug is doing rounds among the Google Pixel devices which counts storage against your storage limits in Google Photos.

During the launch of Pixel 2 and Pixel XL, Google promised free unlimited storage for high-quality pictures exclusively for Pixel users. Apparently, if you have a custom-ROM installed on it, Google Photos might be working differently.

Reportedly, a bug in Google Photos is causing storage issue in custom ROM based Pixel devices. And the issue is merely a result of a typo in the Android Open Source project (AOSP). The Google camera app in custom ROMs was improperly tagging “google” instead of “Google” and the build scripts in AOSP for Pixel devices was set to default “Google.”

The bug was first discovered by a senior member in XDA- developers who then sent a fix to AOSP on 3rd July. It is important to note that this bug only affected Pixel users who had installed custom ROMs on their devices.

Many Custom ROMs makers have already corrected the error so you might want to update to the latest firmware version to get rid of the error.
