Jakarta -King Salman reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s support for the Palestinians after his son declared Israel’s right to live peacefully on their land.
“The kingdom of Saudi Arabia continues to support Palestine and the right of the Palestinian people to an independent state, with Jerusalem as its capital,” said King Salman, as quoted by Reuters on Wednesday (4/4/2018).
On Monday (2/4), he also telephoned US President Donald Trump to encourage the acceleration of the peace process in the region. The direct contact was made after Israeli soldiers killed 16 Palestinians who staged a rally in Gaza.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas expressed his gratitude for the support.
“President Abbas is grateful for the support of the Palestinian people, the issue of Palestine and Jerusalem,” the official statement said as quoted by the WAFA news agency.
King Salman’s remarks came after Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman told The Atlantic magazine that he believes Jews have the right to build a country in the land of their ancestors, albeit only partially.
“I believe the Palestinians and Israelis have the right to their own land, but we have to make a peace deal to ensure stability for everyone and have a normal relationship,” he said.
The growing tension between Saudi Arabia and Iran has raised speculation that Saudi Arabia and Israel are starting to move together against the threat from Tehran.
