New Runway Development Adds Soekarno-Hatta Flight Slot

Jakarta -President Joko Widodo said the addition of runway or runway third in Terminal 3 of Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Cengkareng, Banten, can increase the flight slot from abroad that will go to Indonesia.

The statement was submitted by the President after reviewing the construction project of the runway or taxiway and runway alias third runway at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Thursday (21/06/2018).

The President said many parties want to “fly” to Jakarta via Soekarno-Htta Airport. “Both the Middle East, Asia, Europe want to have no capacity here, so of course, with the addition of the third runway will be able to increase the flight slot from outside to enter Indonesia,” he said.

The addition of the runway is expected to reduce the queue of planes that will take off or land. Nevertheless, the President said if the number of passenger aircraft increased then the runway needs to be added again.

“This is a chase with the growth I’ve been saying, the growth of aviation in our country that grows 9 %.This must be careful, there must be anticipation and calculations,” he said.

With this new runway, the President said the number of flights could increase from 81 per hour to 120 per hour. Thus, the number of flights can increase by 50%.

The President said Soekarno-Hatta Airport is the busiest and bustling airport in Indonesia. On the other hand, he said, the growth of air flight reaches 9% per year.

“This is very fast growth, so we continue to build new airports, new terminals, including the one we built is Soekarno-Hatta,” he said at the project site.

The President said every take off at Soekarno Hatta Airport, the plane needs to wait or queue for about 20-30 minutes at the airport. Thus, there should be an effort to overcome this. One effort is to build east-cross taxiways and runways at the airport.

“The acquisition (land) has been completed 70%, construction has begun and we expect the parallel taxiway to be completed by the end of December 2018. Then the third runway north will be completed in June 2019,” said President.

The construction of runway 3 is estimated to increase the number of passengers by about 30%. The number of passengers currently reaching 63 million passengers will rise to more than 100 million passengers.
