Trump and Putin Hold First Summit Today in Helisinki

Jakarta -After months of phone calls, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin finally met face-to-face today in Helsinki.

Their first summit was seen as unprofitable for US internal political development. However, for Russia the meeting was a victory from the geopolitical side.

No one can hope for a major breakthrough in the talks in the Finish capital. Both are just about to start a warmer relationship to discuss nuclear weapons control and the issue of war in Syria.

The two leaders could have reached agreement to fill the empty embassy due to tension between the two countries.

In addition, the outcome of the meeting is also expected to restore diplomatic properties seized after tensions between the two countries. Previously there was a wave of mutual expelled diplomats and acts of revenge triggered by the actions of former Russian spies in Britain.

Ahead of the summit, the two sides discussed the issue. However, Trump told CBS that he “did not expect much” from the outcome of the meeting.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, as quoted by Reuters on Monday (16/07/2018), told Russian RT TV station that he also has low expectations. He considers the summit to be a success if there is an agreement to reopen the broken lines of communication on all fronts.

As for Putin, the meeting shows that Washington recognizes Moscow as a major force.
