Both are data-only travel eSIMs that you install before you fly. Here is how they differ.
It takes about five minutes, and you can do it all before your trip.
Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Dial *#06#: if you see an EID number, it supports eSIM.
Pick a plan, then scan the QR code or install it in the Airalo or Saily app while you are on Wi-Fi, a day or two before you fly.
In Indonesia, turn on the eSIM line, set it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for that line only.
Leave your home SIM on for calls and SMS, but turn off its data roaming so you are not charged by your home network.
Good to know: coverage is strong in Bali, Jakarta, Lombok and other cities. On boat trips to Komodo, small islands and in the mountains the signal can drop on any network, so download offline maps before you go.
Both work well in Indonesia. Airalo has more small, short data packs and starts from $4.50. Saily starts from $4.79, runs on Telkomsel (the network with the widest coverage outside the big cities) and includes hotspot on all plans. Use the plan finder above to see which is cheaper for your trip.
Yes. Both eSIMs work across Bali, Lombok, Java and other islands with 4G and, in some areas, 5G. On boats, small islands and in the mountains the signal can be weak on any network.
Most iPhones from the XS and XR onward, recent Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel and many other phones support eSIM. The phone must be unlocked. Dial *#06# and look for an EID number to check.
Install it at home on Wi-Fi a day or two before you fly. The plan days usually start when the eSIM first connects to a network in Indonesia, so installing early does not use up your plan.
No. Airalo and Saily Indonesia eSIMs are data only. You keep your own number on WhatsApp, and you can make calls over WhatsApp, FaceTime or other apps.
Yes. Most phones can use a physical SIM and an eSIM together. Keep your home SIM on for calls and SMS codes, and turn off data roaming on it to avoid charges.
Local Indonesian SIM cards are tied to an IMEI registration done when you buy them at the airport or a shop. A travel eSIM from Airalo or Saily is set up before you fly and works when you land, with no SIM shop visit. If you stay for many months, check the provider's help pages.
Maps, WhatsApp and Grab use around 0.3 GB a day. With social media and photos plan for about 0.7 GB a day, and 1.5 GB or more if you stream video or make video calls. If you work remotely or share a hotspot, pick an unlimited plan.
Buying through these links costs you nothing extra. Prices can change; check the final price on Airalo or Saily before you pay.
